Home Remedies of Long Pepper (Pippali)

Long Pepper (Pippali) is a powerful Ayurvedic spice widely used for respiratory problems, digestive health, and immunity. It is also a key ingredient in Trikatu Churna (Long Pepper, Black Pepper, and Dry Ginger), known for balancing Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Below are some traditional home remedies of Long Pepper (Pippali) with effective Ayurvedic applications.

  • Make a paste of long pepper, salt, and water and apply on painful gums to reduce toothache.

  • Drinking warm long pepper soup helps relieve fever, sore throat, and throat irritation.

  • Chew powdered long pepper root or blow it into the nose in cases of fainting and giddiness.

  • Grind long pepper roots with milk and consume to cure thirst and dehydration.

  • Boil ¼ Palam (1 palam=35 grams) of long pepper choorna in 350 ml of cow's milk and drink to treat cough, faintness, and flatulence.

  • Take long pepper powder fried in ghee (1 to 2 grams) twice daily to get relief from cough and cold.

  • Mix 1 to 6 grams of long pepper powder in 200 to 300 ml of buttermilk and consume it for indigestion and diarrhea.

  • Combine long pepper, black pepper, and dry ginger (Trikatu) to regulate cholesterol and prevent obesity.

  • Apply long pepper paste or oil on wounds and skin infections for faster healing.

  • Mix long pepper powder with honey to stop frequent hiccups.

  • For childhood asthma, boil half a long pepper in a glass of milk for 5-7 minutes, strain it, and give the warm milk to the child once daily. Use in moderation, as long pepper has strong heating properties.

  • The fruit of long pepper is extensively used in Ayurveda to treat bronchitis, asthma, sinus congestion, and chronic cold.

  • Steep ½ teaspoon long pepper and ½ teaspoon rock salt in 1½ cups of boiling water for 15 minutes. Drink it warm to clear a sore throat and sinus congestion.

  • Take long pepper with boiled milk to support liver health and manage jaundice.

  • Long pepper (Pippali) helps balance the doshas by reducing excess Kapha and warming the cooling nature of Vata. It is widely used in Ayurveda to restore energy and maintain overall balance.

  • Long pepper helps maintain a healthy digestive tract and tones up the urinary system.

  • Boil dry-roasted barley in water, add 500 mg long pepper powder and rock salt, and drink once daily for joint and muscle pain relief.
