What is a Sore Throat?

  • A sore throat is an inflammatory condition affecting the throat that can lead to discomfort such as pain, irritation, scratchiness, and difficulty swallowing.

  • It is often linked to viral and bacterial infections such as the flu, common cold, chickenpox, streptococcal infections, and diphtheria.


  • Causes and Triggers of a Sore Throat

  • Poor hygiene and sanitation.

  • Sharing personal items or utensils with others.

  • Direct contact with an infected person.

  • Overconsumption of cold or sugary foods.

  • Frequent sinus infections or allergies (e.g., to dust or certain foods).

  • Exposure to harmful chemicals.


  • Home Remedies for a Sore Throat

    For Bacterial Infections:

  • Mix ½ teaspoon of lemon juice and 1 teaspoon of honey in 1 cup of warm water. Sip slowly.

  • Combine 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon each of lemon juice and honey in warm water. Drink this 2-3 times daily.

  • Add 1 teaspoon each of cinnamon powder and black pepper powder to a glass of warm water. Let it cool slightly and gargle with it 2-3 times a day.

  • Dissolve ½ teaspoon of salt in warm water and use it for gargling.

  • Chew a raw garlic (lahsun) clove daily to help combat the infection.

  • Boil 2 cups of water and add 1 teaspoon of slippery elm bark. Let it steep for a few minutes, then strain and drink the warm liquid slowly.


  • For Viral Infections:

  • Mix a small amount of honey, lemon juice, and crushed ginger in warm water and drink it.

  • Steam an apple, mash it, add some honey, and eat it for soothing relief.

  • Add 2 teaspoons of chopped horehound herb to 1 cup of boiling water. Boil for 10 minutes, strain, and drink the tea warm.

  • Eat fresh, warm, and wholesome meals.

  • Drink warm liquids to soothe the throat.

  • Prepare and consume hot green gram (moong dal) soup for pain relief.

  • Maintain proper digestion, as poor gut health can aggravate infections.

  • Consult a doctor in case of persistent or severe symptoms.
