What is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis refers to the inflammation of the sinus cavities located behind the nose, which disrupts normal mucus production and drainage. It can be acute or chronic and often affects breathing and overall comfort.

Common Causes of Sinusitis

  • Viral infections such as the common cold.

  • Allergic rhinitis (seasonal or environmental allergies).

  • Structural abnormalities (nasal polyps, deviated nasal septum, or tumors).

  • Blocked sinus drainage pathways.

  • Use of immunosuppressive medications.

  • Sinusitis Symptoms and Possible Complications

  • Persistent headache.

  • Throbbing facial pain around the eyes, nose bridge, and forehead.

  • Nasal congestion or blockage.

  • Fever.

  • Facial swelling or tenderness, especially under the eyes.

  • Bad breath (halitosis).

  • Thick yellow or green nasal discharge.

  • Loss of smell and taste.

  • Ear pain or pressure.

  • Most cases are caused by viral infections and resolve within 7-10 days. However, chronic sinusitis may persist and affect breathing. If a bacterial infection develops, the condition worsens with severe pain and inflammation.

  • Drink ginger tea regularly to reduce sinus inflammation and strengthen the immune system.

  • Inhale steam from hot water (plain or with camphor, ajwain seeds, or ginger powder) twice daily for nasal relief.

  • Roast ajwain seeds in ghee, mix with aged jaggery and consume with warm water to relieve headaches.

  • Mix turmeric in warm water with a pinch of sugar. Drink twice daily to fight infection and reduce inflammation.

  • Dry roast 5-6 cloves or black pepper, and inhale the fumes to ease nasal congestion and headaches.

  • Try nasya treatment under the guidance of an Ayurvedic expert, based on individual constitution and disease severity.

  • Boil water with basil or mint leaves, steep for 10 minutes, and drink warm to relieve facial pain.

  • Mix ginger powder with Multani mitti, apply to the forehead and between the eyebrows to alleviate acute sinus pain.
