What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition characterized by facial redness and the visibility of small, superficial blood vessels, particularly on the face.

Common Causes of Rosacea

  • Consuming spicy foods.

  • Excessive alcohol intake.

  • Drinking very hot beverages.

  • Intense physical activity.

  • Prolonged exposure to sun or strong winds.

  • Emotional stress or anxiety.

  • Overuse of cosmetic products.

  • Certain medications, such as antihypertensives.


  • Who is More at Risk?

  • Individuals with fair skin.

  • People over the age of 30.

  • Women (more commonly affected than men).

  • Those with a family history of rosacea.


  • Symptoms of Rosacea

  • Persistent facial redness, especially around the nose.

  • Red patches on the central area of the face.

  • Swelling or thickening of the nose.

  • Inflammation of the eyelids; occasionally red or irritated eyes.

  • Warm or flushed sensation on the face.

  • Prominent or dilated blood vessels on the skin.


  • Preventive Measures

  • Avoid alcohol consumption.

  • Follow a mild, non-spicy, and balanced diet.

  • Protect your skin from extreme temperatures and wind.

  • Manage emotional stress.

  • Use cosmetics only after patch testing.

  • Home Remedies for Rosacea

  • Apply fresh aloe vera pulp or gel to calm redness and soothe the skin.

  • A mixture of rose water and sandalwood powder can reduce irritation.

  • Wrap ice cubes in a clean plastic bag and gently massage the face once or twice weekly to improve circulation.

  • Soak chia seeds overnight and consume with raw sugar in the morning to help reduce inflammation.

  • Include cashews, walnuts, almonds, and flaxseeds in your diet to combat inflammation.

  • Apply diluted sandalwood essential oil with carrier oil on red areas (avoid applying to pus-filled areas).

  • Grate bottle gourd and apply to the face for 15 minutes to soothe skin.

  • Rinse the face daily with neem or green tea decoction.

  • Include vitamin B3-rich foods like avocado, oatmeal, brown rice, unprocessed cheese, peanuts, bell peppers, asparagus, peas, and kidney beans.

  • Consume soaked chickpea lentils and raisins on an empty stomach in the morning to help reduce facial redness.

  • According to Ayurveda, leech therapy (Jalaukavacharana) can be an effective treatment for rosacea, depending on the individual's body constitution and the severity of the condition.
