What is Hair Loss?

Hair loss, also known as thinning hair or baldness, is medically referred to as Alopecia. Specifically, Alopecia areata means "hair loss in patches".

It is normal to lose 50–75 hairs on a non-wash day and up to 130 hairs on a wash day. However, when the natural regrowth of hair is disrupted, noticeable hair thinning or excessive hair loss may occur.

Causes of Hair Loss

  • Hereditary or genetic predisposition.

  • Family history of hair loss.

  • Natural aging process.

  • Temporary life changes such as severe stress, and environmental factors (weather, water, etc.).

  • Chronic or acute medical conditions.

  • Nutritional deficiencies or dietary changes.

  • Hormonal shifts during pregnancy, puberty, or menopause (these are often reversible).

  • Home Remedies to Help Reduce Hair Loss

  • Apply almond (badam) oil regularly to the scalp.

  • Use liquorice (mulethi) oil on your hair.

  • Massage lemon oil into your hair before washing.

  • Use neem fruit oil for scalp application.

  • Extract juice from finely chopped onions (pyaz) and apply it to your scalp. Leave it on for 15 minutes before shampooing.

  • Boil crushed garlic (lehsun) cloves in coconut oil, cool slightly, and massage into the scalp. Do this 2–3 times a week.

  • Apply diluted coconut milk to the scalp and leave it overnight. Wash off in the morning.

  • Mix two teaspoons of amla juice or powder with an equal amount of fresh lime juice. Apply to the scalp, let it dry, then rinse with warm water.

  • Create a paste from rose (gulab) petals and water, apply it to the hair, leave it for an hour, and rinse.

  • Haircare Tips to Prevent Hair Loss

  • Use shampoo, oil, and hair products that suit your scalp type and the current season.

  • Always wash your hair after oiling.

  • Avoid combing wet hair.

  • Start combing from the ends to prevent breakage.

  • Limit hair washing to no more than 3 times a week.

  • Prefer unprocessed, cold-pressed, or traditionally made oils for hair care.

  • Avoid frequently switching shampoos and oils.

  • Incorporate ingredients like Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), amla, Triphala, and cow ghee into your diet for better hair health.
