What is Fever?

Fever refers to an increase in body temperature beyond the normal range. The average body temperature is approximately 98.6°F (37°C). When the temperature rises above 100.4°F (38°C), it is generally classified as a fever.

Fever is a natural response of the body to fight off infections caused by bacteria and viruses, many of which cannot survive at elevated temperatures. Therefore, mild fevers often do not require treatment unless they are accompanied by concerning symptoms.

Common Symptoms Associated with Fever

  • Cough.

  • Sore throat.

  • Fatigue.

  • Body aches or joint pain.

  • Nausea.

  • Headache.

  • Loss of appetite (Anorexia).

  • Chills or shivering (rigor), in some cases.

  • Home Remedies for Managing Fever

  • Boil ginger slices in water, strain, then add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of honey. Drink warm.

  • Boil 1 tablespoon of coriander seeds in a cup of water. Once cooled, add a little milk and honey. Consume this to help reduce fever.

  • Soak 1 tablespoon of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. Strain and sip the water throughout the next day.

  • Crush 5–6 garlic cloves and consume them raw for quick relief.

  • Take the Indian gooseberry (amla) juice fried with ghee.

  • Boil 1 teaspoon each of basil leaves and black pepper in water. Simmer for 5 minutes, strain, and drink.

  • Take 20-40 ml of decoction made from long pepper (pipli) twice daily.

  • Diet and Lifestyle During Fever

  • Prefer warm, easily digestible meals or consider fasting for a day if tolerable.

  • Sip on warm, herbal water by boiling 1 litre of water with a pinch of ginger powder and 1 tablespoon of coriander-cumin powder until it reduces to half its quantity.

  • Eat rice cooked in an open vessel along with green gram (moong dal) soup.

  • Avoid daytime naps, staying up late at night, and exposure to harsh winds or sunlight.

  • Steer clear of dairy products, baked goods, and junk food.

  • When to See a Doctor

  • If the fever exceeds 101°F to 102°F.

  • When symptoms become severe or do not improve.

  • For intermittent fevers or if there are underlying health issues, consult a physician or an Ayurveda specialist.
