What is Dry Mouth?

Dry mouth, or xerostomia, occurs when the salivary glands do not produce enough saliva to keep the mouth moist.

Causes of Dry Mouth

  • Ageing process.

  • Certain medications.

  • Nerve damage.

  • Habitual tobacco chewing.

  • Chemotherapy.

  • Radiation therapy.

  • Diabetes.

  • Stroke.

  • Alzheimer's disease.

  • HIV infection.

  • Breathing through the mouth or snoring.

  • Upper respiratory tract infections.


  • Symptoms of Dry Mouth

  • Dry sensation in the mouth.

  • Sticky feeling in the mouth.

  • Dry, whitish tongue.

  • Reduced or altered taste.

  • Bad breathe.

  • Thick or minimal saliva production.


  • Complication

  • Mouth ulcers.

  • Frequent gum or dental problems.

  • Fungal infections.

  • Cracked or chapped lips.

  • Home Remedies for Dry Mouth

  • During chemotherapy or radiation therapy stay well-hydrated by drinking plain water, fresh juices, milk, fruit-and vegetable-based soups, lentil broth, and amla juice.

  • In viral infections drink warm or medicated water depending on your symptoms.

  • For age-related dry mouth, consume a wholesome, nutritious diet including cow ghee, fruits, and vegetables.

  • Incorporate green gram soup, rice gruel, lime water, honey, and cow ghee into your regular meals.

  • Gargle with 1 teaspoon of sesame oil mixed in warm water twice a day for relief.

  • Apply honey to the mouth and tongue for 15-20 minutes to help with dryness.

  • Chew gulkand (a blend of rose petals and sugar) and fennel seeds after meals to soothe the mouth and promote hydration.

  • Do frequent hot water gargles throughout the day to stimulate saliva flow.

  • Try nasya therapy (nasal oil application), which may help enhance saliva production.

  • Take amla juice mixed with honey 2-3 times a day to support salivation.

  • Perform facial and mouth exercises to stimulate muscles and salivary glands.

  • Chew sugar-free gum, amla candy, or herbal lozenges to keep the mouth moist.

  • Avoid alcohol-based products and tobacco.

  • Use non-alcoholic mouthwash to maintain oral hygiene.
