What is Diarrhoea?

Diarrhoea refers to the frequent passing of loose or watery stools, typically three or more times within a 24-hour period. It is most often triggered by viral infections or bacterial toxins.

Symptoms of Diarrhoea

  • Abdominal cramps or pain.

  • Nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite.

  • General fatigue or weakness.

  • Foul-smelling stools.

  • Unusual stool colouration.

  • Presence of blood in the stool.

  • Causes of Diarrhoea

  • Infections are caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites.

  • Intestinal disorders such as tumors, motility issues, or abnormal muscular contractions.

  • Conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) can also manifest with diarrhoea.

  • Certain medications, especially antibiotics, can disrupt the gut flora and lead to diarrhoea.

  • Home Remedies for Diarrhoea

  • Mash a ripe banana with a pinch of salt and tamarind mix well and consume.

  • Drink fresh coconut water twice daily.

  • Boil orange peels in water, let it cool, then add lemon and honey before drinking.

  • Apply fresh ginger juice around the navel area.

  • Consume two bowls of yogurt daily for noticeable relief.

  • Mix juice from blackberry, mango, and tamarind leaves with honey or curd and drink (approx. 20 ml).

  • Cook half a cup of brown rice in three cups of water until soft, mix with a banana, and eat.

  • Drink fresh carrot juice 4-5 times a day, add lemon juice and a bit of honey or sugar for taste.

  • Rub nutmeg in water to make a thin paste and apply it to the navel, or mix 2–3 grams with curd and consume twice daily.

  • Diet and Lifestyle Guidelines for Diarrhoea

  • Drink only boiled and cooled water, and consume hot, freshly prepared food.

  • Avoid bakery items, dairy products, and junk food.

  • Get adequate rest and avoid overexertion.

  • Stay hydrated with fluids like rice water, green gram soup, lentil soup, or vegetable broth.

  • Refrain from consuming cold beverages, ice cream, or chilled food.

  • When to Seek Medical Attention

  • If bowel movements exceed 7-8 times within 6 hours, consult an Ayurvedic or allopathic doctor.

  • Seek medical help if stools have a foul odour, contain blood, or appear abnormally coloured.

  • If symptoms like unconsciousness or other severe complications arise, consult a doctor immediately.
