What Are Dark Circles?

Dark circles refer to the darkened skin beneath the eyes. They are also commonly known as under-eye shadows or dark rings.

Causes of Dark Circles

Dark circles can result from various factors, including:
  • Genetics.
  • Ageing.
  • Dry skin.
  • Excessive crying.
  • Prolonged screen time.
  • Physical or mental stress.
  • Sleep deprivation.
  • Unhealthy diet.
Other contributing factors include:
  • Kidney issues.
  • Hormonal imbalances and menstrual irregularities.
  • Allergic reactions to certain foods.
  • Deficiencies in vitamin C and omega-3 fatty acids.

Diet and Lifestyle Recommendations

  • Include sesame oil and cow ghee in your meals to help rejuvenate the skin.

  • Consume vitamin C-rich foods like amla, lemon, pomegranate, and berries.

  • Honey and nuts such as almonds, cashews, and walnuts are beneficial.

  • Limit screen time on devices like phones, laptops, and TVs.

  • Avoid late-night wakefulness as it strains the eyes and surrounding muscles.

  • Stay well-hydrated and avoid long periods of fasting.


  • Home Remedies for Dark Circles

  • Mix 5 gm each of turmeric and sandalwood powder with milk to form a paste. Apply in the morning around the eyes.

  • Apply fresh cucumber juice under the eyes and rinse after 15 minutes.

  • Combine equal parts of potato and cucumber juice and apply to the affected area.

  • Blend 1-2 fresh tomatoes with 1 tbsp lemon juice, a pinch of gram flour, and turmeric to form a thick paste. Apply around the eyes and wash off after 15 minutes.

  • Gently massage a small amount of almond oil under the eyes before bed and rinse with cold water in the morning.

  • Crush fresh mint leaves and apply them under the eyes for 5-10 minutes, then rinse.

  • Soak cotton pads in cold milk and place them over the eyes for 15–20 minutes.

  • Apply used cold tea bags over closed eyes for a few minutes to reduce dark circles.

  • Combine orange juice with glycerine and gently apply it around the eyes three times a week to help reduce dark circles and enhance skin brightness.

  • Dab fresh lemon juice around the eyes using a cotton ball. Rinse after 10 minutes.

  • Apply a paste of nutmeg under the eyes before sleeping and wash it off the next morning.
