What Are Cold Sores?

  • Cold sores are viral infections characterized by fever and the appearance of blisters on the skin.

  • They typically appear as fluid-filled blisters around the lips.


  • Causes of Cold Sores

  • Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).

  • This contagious virus spreads through direct contact with infected individuals or their bodily fluids.


  • Triggers for Recurrence

  • Fever.

  • Excessive sun or wind exposure.

  • Physical trauma.

  • Hormonal fluctuations.

  • Emotional stress.

  • Fatigue.


  • Symptoms of Cold Sores

  • Fever.

  • Red patches on the skin.

  • Inflammation and irritation of the skin.

  • Body aches.

  • Headache.

  • Throat discomfort.

  • Gum inflammation.


  • When to Consult a Doctor?

    Seek medical attention if:

  • The cold sores persist or grow in size beyond 10–15 days.

  • There is irritation or inflammation in the eyes.

  • Symptoms worsen over time.

  • You experience frequent recurrences of cold sores.


  • Preventive Measures

  • Avoid close contact with infected individuals and their personal items.

  • Wash your hands thoroughly after contact.

  • Do not scratch or touch the sores, as this can worsen the condition and spread the infection.


  • Home Remedies for Cold Sores

  • Apply a mixture of honey and lemon to the affected area (avoid broken or bleeding skin) to help reduce infection.

  • Apply fresh aloe vera gel to soothe irritation and promote healing.

  • Grind basil leaves with honey into a paste to reduce viral activity and speed up recovery.

  • Mix sandalwood powder with crushed rose petals and apply to larger or bleeding sores.

  • Combine oregano essential oil with a carrier oil and apply to the affected area to fight infection.

  • Drinking lemon tea with honey (once cooled after boiling) may help combat the virus internally.

  • Mix ginger, black pepper, and rock salt with honey and cow ghee; consume for its antiviral benefits.

  • Apply to cold sore patches to help reduce inflammation and discomfort.
