What is Chilblain?

Chilblains are abnormal skin reactions triggered by exposure to cold temperatures, especially when transitioning from a warm to a cold environment. They can cause inflammation, redness, bluish discolouration, and sometimes even bleeding.

Causes of Chilblains

  • Prolonged exposure to extreme cold.

  • Wearing tight clothing in cold weather.

  • Poor blood circulation.

  • Circulatory system disorders.

  • Raynaud's disease.

  • Lupus.

  • Autoimmune conditions.

  • Symptoms of Chilblains

  • Intense itching.

  • Burning sensation.

  • Redness in the affected areas.

  • Pain or tenderness.

  • The skin turns from red to dark blue, often with swelling.

  • Dryness and flaking.

  • Complications & When to Seek Medical Advice

If left untreated, chilblains can worsen. It's important to consult a healthcare professional promptly. Possible complications include:
    • Severe pain.

    • Ulcers.

    • Secondary skin infections.

    • Scarring or skin lesions.

    Preventive Measures

  • Stay well-hydrated and keep the body warm.

  • Avoid smoking and alcohol.

  • Protect your nose, eyes, and feet with appropriate clothing.

  • Avoid sudden changes in temperature.

  • Wear loose-fitting, warm socks, gloves, and clothing.

  • Keep your hands, feet, and face dry.

  • Home Remedies for Chilblains

  • Apply mustard oil (Sarshapa taila) to the affected areas twice daily to help soothe and heal the skin.

  • Soak your hands and feet in warm (not hot) water mixed with ginger powder. This helps improve circulation and ease symptoms.

  • Gently apply fresh aloe vera gel to reduce inflammation and promote healing.

  • Grated raw potato can be applied directly to the skin to relieve irritation and calm inflammation.

  • Use thyme essential oil diluted with a carrier oil (like coconut or olive oil) for topical application to ease discomfort.

  • Rub a freshly sliced onion over the affected (but unbroken) skin to reduce inflammation, do not apply to cracked or broken skin.

  • Create a soothing paste using sandalwood powder and crushed rose petals, and apply it to the affected areas.

  • For cracked or broken skin, apply a mixture of honey and licorice powder to accelerate healing and reduce pain.

  • Maintain a nutritious, calcium-rich diet and engage in regular exercise to support overall circulation and skin health.
