Causes of Chapped Lips
One of the primary causes of chapped lips is frequent lip licking.
Other contributing factors include dehydration or insufficient water intake.
Chapped lips can also result from anemia.
Certain food or medication-related skin allergies may trigger lip dryness and irritation.
Infections such as herpes simplex or, in some cases, fungal infections can also cause chapped lips.
A deficiency in essential vitamins is another common cause.
Symptoms and When to See a Doctor
Common symptoms of chapped lips include dryness, cracking, flaking skin, redness, bleeding, and inflammation.
If the condition is linked to a viral or fungal infection, proper lip care is essential, and it is advisable to consult a doctor.
Persistent black discolouration or intense itching may indicate a fungal infection.
If bleeding and inflammation worsen or do not improve within 3 to 4 days, it could be a sign of secondary infection, warranting medical attention.
