What is Asthma?

Asthma is a respiratory condition in which the airways of the lungs become narrowed or blocked, making it difficult to breathe. Unlike some other lung conditions, asthma-related airway obstruction is reversible, either naturally or with medication. Although asthma and cough are different, people with asthma often experience persistent coughing along with breathing difficulties. The condition is primarily marked by inflammation and constriction of the air passages.

Common Symptoms of Asthma:

  • Wheezing

  • Shortness of breath

  • Recurrent coughing

  • Chest tightness

  • Excess mucus production

  • Fatigue

  • Difficulty speaking

  • Effective Home Remedies for Asthma

  • Cut fresh ginger into small pieces and boil it in water. Let it steep for 5 minutes, then cool and drink it.

  • Eating raw onions can help clear the airways and ease breathing difficulties.

  • Eat a fig (anjeer) in the morning with a pinch of long pepper (piplamul) powder.

  • Consume pills made of jaggery (gud) and camphor (kapur) for relief.

  • Combine equal parts of long pepper, amla, and dried ginger (sonth). Take 2-3 grams of this mixture with honey and sugar two to three times a day.

  • Heat mustard oil with camphor and gently massage it on the chest and upper back several times a day.

  • Apply hot sesame oil mixed with rock salt to the chest, then use a warm salt compress for relief.

  • Heat salt and turmeric in a pan, inhale the smoke and expel mucus to clear the airways.

  • Make a stick with turmeric, sugar powder, guggul, and black pepper powder. Dry it in the sun, then burn one end and inhale the smoke through the nostrils while exhaling from the mouth during an asthma attack.

  • Drinking warm water can help soothe an asthma attack.

  • Since asthma can be triggered by acid reflux, avoid foods that cause stomach discomfort.

  • Avoid curd, buttermilk, brinjal, tomatoes, ladies’ fingers, and other allergenic foods that may increase airway inflammation.
