What is Anemia (Anaemia)?

Anemia is a condition characterized by a lower-than-normal number of red blood cells (RBCs) or hemoglobin levels, leading to reduced oxygen transport to the lungs and other organs. Hemoglobin, a metalloprotein found in red blood cells, contains iron and plays a crucial role in carrying oxygen throughout the body. Normal hemoglobin levels typically range from 13.8 to 17.2 gm/dl in males and 12.1 to 15.1 gm/dl in females.

Cause of Anemia:

Red blood cells are produced in the bone marrow and typically have a lifespan of about 120 days. Any disruption in their normal lifecycle can result in anemia. The condition generally arises due to two main factors:

  • Reduced Production: A decrease in the production of red blood cells or hemoglobin.

  • Increased Loss or Destruction: Excessive loss or premature destruction of red blood cells.

  • Other Causes of Anemia:

  • Poor Diet: Low intake of iron-rich foods or essential vitamins needed for hemoglobin production.

  • Absorption Issues: Metabolic disorders or diseases affecting nutrient absorption.

  • Chronic Illnesses: Long-term hospitalization or underlying health conditions.

  • Bone Marrow Disorders: Conditions such as thalassemia, sickle cell disease, and bone marrow diseases that hinder hemoglobin formation.

  • Symptoms of Anemia (Anaemia):

Individuals with anemia may experience some or all of the following symptoms:

  • Fatigue and weakness

  • Pale skin

  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat (palpitations)

  • Shortness of breath

  • Hair loss

  • General discomfort or malaise

  • Dizziness (vertigo)

  • Leg cramps

  • Worsening of heart-related conditions

  • Home Remedies for Anemia (Anaemia)

    1. Nutrient-Rich Juices & Blends:
    • Blend one medium-sized beetroot, three carrots, and half a sweet potato in a juicer. Drink daily.

    • Consume pomegranate juice to enhance vitamin absorption.

    • Drink a mixture of Amla (Indian gooseberry) and sugarcane juice for improved iron levels.

    • Grape juice (Angur) is also beneficial for anemia.

    2. Ayurvedic & Herbal Remedies:
    • Mix turmeric (haldi) and Triphala powder with honey or ghee in an unequal proportion and take twice a day.

    • Take 3-6 gm of Amla churna with honey (shahad) daily.

    • Consume 2-3 dried figs (anjeer) with milk or honey twice daily.

    • Take Liquorice (Mulethi) powder (3-6 gm) with honey for improved hemoglobin levels.

    3. Iron-Rich Foods:
    • Eat green leafy vegetables, beets, dried fruits, brown rice, lentils, molasses, raisins, liver, oysters, etc.

    • Replace white rice with brown rice and add green gram and soybeans to your diet.

    • Cooking food in iron pots can enhance iron content.

    • Eat one pomegranate and one apple daily to naturally boost hemoglobin levels.

    4. Foods to Avoid:
    • Limit coffee, tea, and antacids, as they hinder iron absorption.

    5. Dairy & Digestive Support:
    • Cow’s milk improves vitamin absorption, particularly in vegetarian diets.

    • A wholesome diet and strong digestion help in faster anemia recovery.

    6. Special Ayurvedic Recipe:
    • Ragi halwa is highly beneficial. To prepare: Fry coarse ragi flour in cow ghee, add jaggery and water, and adjust the consistency. Consume once a day.
