Comprehensive Guide to Piles (Hemorrhoids) - Causes, Symptoms, Home Remedies & Treatment

What are Piles / Hemorrhoids?

Piles, also known as hemorrhoids, occur when the veins around the anus or lower rectum become swollen and inflamed. This condition is caused by increased pressure on the internal or external veins surrounding the anal canal.

Causes of Piles / Hemorrhoids

  • Consuming spicy and heavy foods.

  • Occupations involving prolonged sitting or desk work.

  • Chronic constipation.

  • Low intake of water and fiber-rich foods.

  • Sedentary lifestyle.


  • Symptoms of Piles / Hemorrhoids

  • Bleeding during bowel movements.

  • The sensation of a foreign object in the rectum.

  • Painful defecation.

  • Constipation is accompanied by stomach discomfort.

  • Excessive or dripping bleeding after passing stool.


  • Home Remedies for Piles / Hemorrhoids

  • Soak dried figs (anjeer) in warm water overnight and eat them first thing in the morning.

  • Take one tablespoon of Triphala with water before bedtime.

  • Grind black cumin (jeera) seeds, add one teaspoon of the powder to a glass of water, and drink once daily.

  • Boil ripe bananas and consume them twice a day.

  • Extract juice from crushed bitter gourd leaves; mix 3 teaspoons of this juice in a glass of buttermilk and drink on an empty stomach every morning for one month.

  • Apply juice extracted from carrot (gajar) and beetroot (chukandar) to the swollen veins.

  • Drink a glass of buttermilk mixed with ¼ teaspoon of carom seed powder (ajwain) and a pinch of salt.


  • Medicinal Liquids

  • Consume buttermilk (chaacha) at least twice daily.

  • Boil pomegranate peel (anaar) in water, strain, and drink twice daily.

  • Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water every day to stay well hydrated.


  • Ointments for Piles

  • Pilex ointment (Himalaya)

  • Arshonyt ointment (Charak)

  • Pilief ointment (Charak)

  • Arshohitta ointment (Dhootpapeshwar)
  • (Note: These ointments are also available as oral tablets with the same names.)

  • Kasisadi Taila

  • Sitz Bath: Boil Triphala powder or grated radish in water, pour the warm water into a tub and take a sitz bath.


  • Do’s and Don’ts for Piles / Hemorrhoids

  • Avoid excessively spicy and fried foods.

  • Limit intake of non-vegetarian foods.

  • Refrain from consuming alcohol.

  • Avoid lifting heavy weights as they may contribute to piles.

  • Including Surana (elephant foot yam) as a vegetable in your diet can be beneficial for piles.
